Abstract

Elin Kelsey reflects on her encounters with the natural world from dusk to dawn. While spending her nights sleeping outside, she considers studies on the physical, mental, emotional, and social benefits of spending time outdoors, examining the historic roots of such practices around the world, from her home in British Columbia to Finland.

  • Elin Kelsey, Western Washington University

    Elin Kelsey is an influential thought leader for the evidence–based hope and climate–solutions movement. She is the author of Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We Think Is Critical to Solving the Environmental Crisis (2020). Recognizing the crucial role of climate emotions to climate engagement, she works on a range of collaborative projects with scientists, artists, social influencers, journalists, educators, and youth. She was a Carson Fellow in 2013–14 and came back as a visiting scholar in 2016. More information at www.elinkelsey.org.
