Abstract

When and how did certain shark species, considered true fighters by recreational anglers, become vulnerable and even endangered, a loss that threatens marine ecosystems today? Miles Powell, a scholar of marine and global environmental history, dives into sportfishing practices, literature, biology, and ecology to find answers.

Author Biography

  • Miles Powell, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

    Miles Powell is associate professor of history at NTU, Singapore, where he studies marine and global environmental history, and an affiliate of the RCC from 15 July 2022 through 15 July 2023. His first book, Vanishing America: Species Extinction, Racial Peril, and The Origins of Conservation (2016), uses discourses of extinction to explore connections between racial attitudes and environmental thought. His current research projects include a global environmental history of human interactions with sharks and a grant-funded study of Singapore’s marine environmental history.
