Abstract

In an ocean-conscious version of environmental history, Shen Hou looks across the Pacific and sees not only a route of trade and imperialism but also an unseen bond between the cities of Qingdao and Los Angeles. Tracing the unique history of each city’s founding, she considers what it means to live in a coastal community both now and in the uncertain climate of the future.
